[Seeker & New Believer Reading Plan September 23] Today’s reading covers Genesis Chapter 7. This daily guide includes an opening greeting, a storyline-driven context snapshot, key verse (KJV), synchronized devotional thoughts, reflection questions, space for a worship song, and a scripture-grounded closing prayer.
Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 6 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we explore Genesis Chapter 7.
If yesterday's Chapter 6 was the preparation period where God announced judgment and provided the blueprints for the Ark, today's Chapter 7 is the decisive moment when judgment arrives. As the windows of heaven opened and the fountains of the great deep broke forth, the entire world was submerged under a boundless ocean—a powerful, sobering scene in human history.
Yet, amidst the roaring waters and rising storms, the most touching detail shines through: "And the LORD shut him in." Out on those chaotic, dangerous waves, that single door closed by God's own hand kept out destruction and preserved life and peace within.
Let us step into today's passage with awe and a quiet heart.
Previously in Genesis: Decades of Waiting and Faithfulness
Yesterday in Chapter 6, we saw the earth filled with violence and corruption. God revealed His plan to cleanse the earth by a flood, instructing Noah to build an Ark. Noah obeyed completely in faith.
After decades of patient waiting, ridicule, and preparation, the day of God's promised response arrived in Chapter 7!
Today's Story: Entering the Ark, The Fountains Burst, and God Shuts the Door
The Final 7-Day Call & Entering (v. 1–10): The Lord called Noah: "Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation." God instructed Noah to bring clean beasts by sevens and unclean by twos, along with birds, promising rain in seven days for forty days and forty nights. In Noah's 600th year, he entered the Ark with his wife, his three sons (Shem, Ham, Japheth), their wives, and pairs of every living creature.
Fountains Burst & God Shuts Him In (v. 11–16): On the seventeenth day of the second month, "all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened," pouring down rain for forty days and forty nights. After everyone was safely inside, scripture records this foundational detail: "And the LORD shut him in."
The All-Consuming Flood & The Solitary Ark (v. 17–24): The waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth, covering all the high hills under the whole heaven by fifteen cubits. All flesh died that moved upon the earth—birds, cattle, beasts, creeping things, and every human—leaving only Noah and those with him in the Ark. The waters prevailed upon the earth for 150 days.
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On God Shutting the Door: Verse 16 highlights that "the LORD shut him in" rather than Noah closing it himself. What does this reveal about divine security and protection?
On the Window of Grace: God granted a final 7-day period before the floodwaters fell (v. 4), and the Ark's door stood open for years. What does this teach us about God's patience, and the seriousness of an expiring door of opportunity?
On Peace Within the Storm: While mountains sank beneath the waves outside, what was the state of heart inside the Ark? Where do you anchor your peace when life feels overwhelming?
7 And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
5 And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him.
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.
16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
“And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.”
— Genesis 7:16 (KJV)
Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
God Shutting the Door Guarantees Absolute Security:
Had Noah shut the door himself, hesitation or fear might have overcome him amidst the storm; but God Himself shut him in. Divine security is unshakeable—no storm, flood, or adversary can force open what God has sealed for your protection. Resting in Christ means resting in an unbreakable haven.
The Door of Grace Will Not Stay Open Forever:
God patiently waited while the Ark was constructed over decades, even adding a final 7-day window. God desires that none should perish. Yet, divine patience has a purposeful timeline. When the door is sealed, opportunity passes. This reminds us to cherish every moment of grace we are granted today.
Unshakable Peace Amidst Life's Rising Floods:
Outside the Ark lay destruction and darkness; inside lay life, peace, and divine order. Life's circumstances may sometimes feel like rising floods covering our highest hills, yet when we abide in Christ—our true Ark—our souls remain anchored in unwavering peace.

Almighty and Ever-Faithful Heavenly Father,
