Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 14 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we explore Genesis Chapter 22.
After 25 long years of waiting and the immense joy of Isaac's birth in Chapter 21, Abraham's life reaches its most profound, rigorous, and supreme test—God commands him to offer up his only, beloved son Isaac as a burnt offering.
This chapter serves as the ultimate demonstration of Abraham's unwavering faith and obedience. Even more profoundly, it presents one of the clearest Old Testament foreshadowings of the cross of Jesus Christ. On Mount Moriah, as Abraham stretched out his hand to lay down his ultimate treasure, the Angel of the Lord stopped him, revealing a ram provided in the thicket. There, God was revealed as Jehovah-Jireh—"The Lord Will Provide."
Let us step into today's holy passage with deep reverence and expectant hearts.
Where are we today?
Previously in Genesis: Isaac's Birth & The Covenant at Beersheba (Ch. 21)
In Chapter 21, God faithfully fulfilled His promise, giving Isaac to 100-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah. Hagar and Ishmael departed into the wilderness, where God sustained them. Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech at Beersheba and called upon the name of El Olam, the Everlasting God.
Chapter 22 takes place after these events, when Isaac has grown into a young man.
Today's Story: The Command at Moriah, Isaac's Submission, Jehovah-Jireh, and Covenant Reaffirmation
The Ultimate Command & Abraham's Early Morning Obedience (v. 1–8): God tested Abraham, telling him to take his only son Isaac, whom he loved, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon a mountain. Abraham rose up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, clave the wood, and took two young men alongside Isaac. After three days of travel, seeing the place afar off, Abraham instructed his servants to stay while he and the lad went up to worship. Carrying the wood, fire, and knife, Isaac asked: "Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" Abraham answered: "My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering."
The Altar, The Ram, and Jehovah-Jireh (v. 9–14): Upon reaching the place, Abraham built an altar, laid the wood, bound Isaac, and laid him on the altar. Just as Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son, the Angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, saying: "Lay not thine hand upon the lad... for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me." Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. He took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh ("In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen / The Lord Will Provide").
Unconditional Oath & The Lineage of Rebekah (v. 15–24): The Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time, swearing by God Himself that because Abraham had not withheld his only son, God would abundantly bless him and multiply his seed as the stars of heaven and the sand upon the seashore. God promised that in his seed all the nations of the earth would be blessed. The chapter concludes with news of Milcah's children born to Abraham's brother Nahor, introducing Rebekah (Isaac's future wife).
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On Surrendering Our "Isaacs": God asked for Abraham's "only son, whom thou lovest." Is there any gift, blessing, or relationship in your life that has subtly taken the place of the Giver in your heart?
Foreshadowing the Cross: Consider the parallel details—a father willing to offer his beloved son, a son bearing the wood up the hill, and God providing a substitutionary sacrifice. How does this deepen your gratitude for God offering His Son, Jesus Christ, on Calvary?
The True Meaning of "Jehovah-Jireh": "The Lord Will Provide" was revealed not at a moment of selfish comfort, but on the mountain of radical obedience. How does this reshape your understanding of God's provision in your daily life?
22 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.
15 And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;
21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.”

Real Faith Surrenders the Closest Treasure:
Isaac was the long-awaited son of promise—the focal point of Abraham's future and joy. Yet, when God spoke, Abraham yielded without argument or delay, rising "early in the morning." As the writer of Hebrews reflects, Abraham trusted that God was able to raise Isaac even from the dead. When we place our cherished blessings back into God's hands, we discover that He is faithful to preserve and sanctify what we surrender.
Moriah Points Directly to Calvary:
On Mount Moriah, at the decisive second, God stayed Abraham's hand and spared Isaac. Yet centuries later on Calvary, when holy justice required a sacrifice for human sin, the Heavenly Father did not spare His own Son. Jesus Christ willingly bore the wood of the cross and became the ultimate substitute—the true Lamb of God caught in the thicket of our sin.
Provision Meets Us on the Path of Obedience:
"Jehovah-Jireh" is not a magical formula for material desires; it is a promise forged in trusting obedience. Abraham saw the ram only after he traveled the three-day journey, built the altar, and surrendered his will. When we walk obediently where God leads, we can rest assured that on His holy mountain, His grace will always prove sufficient.

A Micro-Step Today:
Take a "surrender & trust" micro-step today: Write down on a piece of paper the burden or gift you feel most protective over. Pray a simple prayer of release: "Lord, this belongs to You. I trust Your heart, and I place it in Your hands, believing that You are Jehovah-Jireh."
O Loving, Holy, and Almighty Heavenly Father,
As we read Genesis Chapter 22 today, our hearts bow in reverence before the mountain of Moriah. We are awed by the faith of Abraham, the submission of Isaac, and the magnitude of Your provision.
Thank You for the ultimate gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Where You spared Isaac, You did not spare Your own beloved Son, but offered Him up on Calvary as the perfect Lamb for our salvation. Words cannot express the depth of our gratitude for such boundless love.
Grant us a heart of surrender like Abraham's. Teach us to trust You with our most precious blessings, knowing that You are the Giver of every good gift. As we walk in obedience to Your word, open our eyes to behold Your provision, and anchor our souls in Your name—Jehovah-Jireh.
