This daily guide includes an opening greeting, a narrative-driven context snapshot (featuring "What Happened Before" and "Today's Thread"), key verse (KJV), synchronized devotional thoughts, reflection questions, space for a worship song, and a scripture-grounded closing prayer.
Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 46 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we step into one of the most thrilling and grace-filled narrative chapters in Joshua—Chapter 2.
If Chapter 1 outlined the overarching divine mandate given to Joshua, Chapter 2 unveils a crucial undercover mission on the eve of holy conquest!
Before crossing the Jordan River, Joshua secretly dispatched two spies to scout out Canaan's frontline fortress—Jericho. Instead of meeting capture or death at the hands of Jericho's heavily guarded patrols, the spies found refuge in an extraordinary place: the house of an unclean, marginalized Gentile woman named Rahab the harlot.
Rahab not only risked her life to hide the spies, but uttered one of the most magnificent confessions of faith in the Old Testament: "The Lord your God, He is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath!" The spies bound themselves to Rahab by an oath, offering a "scarlet cord" tied in her window as the pledge of protection when judgment fell upon Jericho. This scarlet cord saved Rahab's household and stands as a vibrant Old Testament prefigurement of the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ!
Let us enter Joshua Chapter 2 with hearts full of wonder, gratitude, and holy reverence!
1. What Happened Before: Re-scouting Canaan Forty Years Later
Before entering Chapter 2, let us recall the tragic reconnaissance mission forty years earlier (Numbers 13). Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan; ten fixated on fortified cities and giants, spreading fear that condemned an entire generation to perish in the desert. Forty years later, Joshua sends two spies—not to doubt God's promise, but to prepare in faith for the coming campaign.
2. Today's Thread: Covenant in the Ancient City and the Token of Grace
Night fell over Jericho, a heavily fortified city guarding the entrance to Canaan. The two spies sent secretly by Joshua slipped through the gates and lodged in the house of Rahab the harlot, built into the city wall. Soon, the king of Jericho learned of their presence and dispatched guards to seize them.
In a life-or-death crisis, Rahab made a fateful choice. Refusing loyalty to Jericho's doomed king, she risked execution for treason by hiding the spies under stalks of flax on her roof, misleading the king's search party. When the coast was clear, she went up to the roof and revealed the deep terror gripping Jericho alongside her own profound conviction: "I know that the Lord hath given you the land... For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you... as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man... for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath."
Though Rahab was a marginalized Gentile prostitute, the news of God's mighty redemptive acts moved her to fear the Lord rather than harden her heart. She pleaded with the spies to swear by the Lord that they would show kindness to her father's house and deliver their lives from death when Jericho fell.
The spies agreed, establishing a sacred covenant: when Israel attacked, Rahab must gather her entire family inside her home and bind a scarlet cord in the window through which she lowered the spies. Anyone inside the house with the scarlet cord would be spared. Escaping safely back to camp, the spies delivered a report radically different from forty years ago: "Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us!"
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On Rahab's Faith: Rahab was a Gentile harlot whose knowledge of God came merely through rumors. Why is her faith commended so highly in the New Testament (Hebrews 11, James 2)?
On the Scarlet Cord: How does the scarlet cord hanging in the window parallel the Passover blood on the doorposts in Exodus? How does it point forward to Christ's redeeming blood?
On the Spies' Report: Compared to the spies forty years earlier, why did these two spies see the enemy's terror instead of their own weakness?
2 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
9 And she said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:
13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the Lord hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.
21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
“And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.”
— Joshua 2:11 (KJV)
“Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.”
— Joshua 2:18 (KJV)
“And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.”
— Joshua 2:24 (KJV)
Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
Real Faith Is Defined by Heart Reverence, Not Social Standing:
In the eyes of society, Rahab was a marginalized prostitute in a pagan city; in the eyes of God, she possessed extraordinary spiritual perception. While Jericho trembled in doom, Rahab recognized that "Jehovah is God in heaven above and earth beneath" and staked her life on His mercy. The Gospel of Matthew even includes Rahab in the royal genealogy of Jesus Christ! God does not measure you by a broken past; when you turn to Him in genuine faith, He rewrites your destiny.
The "Scarlet Cord" as a Prophetic Type of Christ's Blood:
When judgment engulfed Jericho, only the home marked by the scarlet cord stood as an unshakeable sanctuary. Mirroring the Passover blood on Egyptian doorposts, it points directly to the blood of Jesus shed on the Cross! Today, amid a world under judgment, only those sheltered under the redeeming blood of Christ enjoy eternal safety and peace.
Perceiving Victory Through the Eyes of Faith:
The spies' report proved that intimidating obstacles are often empty facades when God goes before His people. Forty years earlier, spies saw themselves as helpless grasshoppers; these spies saw Canaan's strongholds melting in fear before God. When we view challenges through faith, we discover that God has already prepared our path to victory.
