Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to our Old Testament journey! Today, we step into one of the most awe-inspiring, miracle-filled passages in Joshua—Chapter 3.
If Chapter 1 gave the divine mandate and Chapter 2 provided espionage preparation inside Jericho, Chapter 3 marks the monumental moment an entire nation crosses the impassable barrier into the Promised Land!
Confronted by the Jordan River overflowing all its banks during harvest season, Israel possessed neither bridges nor boats. Yet God did not dry up the river before they moved; instead, He commanded the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant to step directly into the swelling waters first.
The very instant the soles of the priests' feet dipped into the brim of the water, the upstream waters stood and rose up upon a heap, cutting off the raging flood downstream. All Israel crossed over on dry ground! This was not only a powerful echo of the Red Sea miracle, but God's vivid declaration to the new generation that He was in their midst to conquer Canaan before them.
Let us enter Joshua Chapter 3 with reverent, expectant, and obedient hearts!
1. What Happened Before: Good News from Spies and a Prepared Camp
Before entering Chapter 3, recall the encouraging outcome of Chapter 2. The two spies returned safely from Jericho with joyous news: "Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us." Stirred by faith, the entire camp stood ready to march at the Lord's command.
2. Today's Thread: Departing the Camp and Stepping into Swelling Waters
Morning light broke over Shittim as Joshua led the congregation to the banks of the Jordan River, where they lodged for three days. Swollen with spring floods, the rushing river seemed an insurmountable wall blocking the wilderness-trained people.
At this critical hour, officers passed through the camp delivering divine march instructions: when the people saw the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, they were to leave their places and follow it. Yet a distance of two thousand cubits (about 900 meters) was to be kept between them and the Ark, for they were traveling "a way ye have not passed heretofore," requiring deep reverence and focus on God's guidance. Joshua solemnly commanded the assembly: "Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you."
The Lord assured Joshua that from this day He would begin to magnify him before all Israel, proving that as He was with Moses, so He would be with him. God instructed the priests carrying the Ark to lead the way: "As soon as the soles of the feet of the priests shall rest in the waters, the waters shall be cut off."
As the people broke camp and the priests stepped toward the raging river, an astounding miracle unfolded. The swollen waters flowing from upstream halted at the city of Adam and rose in a heap, while the water flowing down toward the Salt Sea was completely cut off. The priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the people had safely passed over to the other side. Wherever the Ark stood, divine presence held back danger and death!
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On "Sanctify Yourselves": Why did God demand self-purification before performing a great miracle? Which comes first: inner holiness or outer victory?
On "As Soon as the Soles Rest in Water": Why did God wait for the priests' feet to touch the water before parting the river? What principle of faith does this reveal?
On "Standing Firm in the Midst": The priests carrying the Ark stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed until everyone crossed over. What does this reveal about spiritual leadership and divine security?
3 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.
2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;
3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.
5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.
6 And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
7 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.
8 And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.
9 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the Lord your God.
10 And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan.
12 Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.
14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;
15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.
17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

“And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.”
— Joshua 3:17 (KJV)
“And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.”
— Joshua 3:13 (KJV)

Personal Sanctification Prepares the Way for God's Power:
When facing impossible barriers, human instinct rushes toward human strategy; yet God's primary instruction was "Sanctify yourselves." God does not manifest His glory in uncleanness or spiritual compromise. When we purge sin and worldly self-will from our hearts, presenting ourselves holy to the Lord, our lives become vessels fit to display His power.
Genuine Faith Steps Out Before the Waters Part:
Had the priests demanded dry ground before stepping forward, they would have stood on the bank forever. God rarely reveals the entire pathway while we stand still; He opens the way as we step out in obedience! Often, the "Jordan Rivers" in our lives refuse to part because we remain hesitant on the shoreline. When you obey God's Word and dip your foot into uncertain waters, His mighty hand holds back the flood.
Jesus Is Our Great High Priest Standing Firm in the Deep:
The priests bearing the Ark stood firm in the dry riverbed, shielding the people until every last traveler reached safety. This offers a breathtaking picture of Jesus Christ! Bearing the ultimate covenant, He stood in the deep waters of sin and death, holding back divine judgment so that we might pass safely from death into eternal life.
