Welcome back to Day 17 of our reading journey! After listening to Jesus’ tender instructions and farewell promises in the previous chapters, today we pause to listen to one of the most sacred and intimate prayers in all of Scripture—the prayer Jesus offered to the Heavenly Father right before going to the cross.

Have you ever experienced moments of profound loneliness, feeling as though no one truly understands the burdens you carry? Or as a new believer, do you ever worry that your faith is too fragile to stand firm in such a complex and chaotic world?

Let's pause and take a quiet moment. Carrying these honest uncertainties and fears, let's step into John Chapter 17 together, and listen closely to what Jesus requested from the Father for His disciples—and for you—on that fateful night.

Where are we today?

John Chapter 17 is widely known as Jesus' "High Priestly Prayer." It is the most complete recording of Jesus praying in the entire Bible and unfolds in three distinct movements:

1. Jesus Prays for Himself (John 17:1–5): Asking the Father to glorify Him so that He may glorify the Father and fulfill His mission of redemption.

2. Jesus Prays for His Immediate Disciples (John 17:6–19): Asking the Father to protect them in a hostile world, sanctify them by the truth, and keep them from the evil one.

3. Jesus Prays for All Future Believers (John 17:20–26): Jesus explicitly prays for "those who will believe in me through their message"—which includes us today—that we may be united as one and dwell in His love.

17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

🌟Daily Heart-Check: Already Held in His Praying Arms 

• You Were Already on His Mind: The most staggering revelation of John 17 is that two thousand years ago, on the quiet night before His crucifixion, Jesus was not just thinking of the twelve men sitting next to Him. He looked across time and space and held you in His heart. Before you even knew His name, He had already asked the Father to keep you safe and anchor your soul.

• Protected in the World, Not Plucked Out: Jesus did not pray for God to instantly remove us from life's hardships, but rather that we would be "protected from the evil one" while living in this world (17:15). Faith is not an escape from reality; it is an unshakable inner security anchored in God's truth as we navigate the storm.

  How does it comfort your heart today to realize that Jesus personally prayed for your safety, faith, and spiritual peace thousands of years ago?

  Whenever you feel overwhelmed or lonely today, whisper this sentence to yourself: "Jesus has already prayed for me; I am not fighting this alone."

Loving Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving us Your word today as we read John Chapter 17.

When we read how Jesus lifted His eyes to heaven before going to the cross—pouring out His heart for Himself, His disciples, and specifically for those of us who would believe in Him later—our hearts are deeply moved. Lord, we confess that in this complicated world, we often feel our faith is weak and fragile. When facing life's unexpected storms and anxieties, we easily feel isolated. Thank You for showing us through today's chapter that long before we ever sought You, Jesus called us by name and interceded for our strength, unity, and protection.

When we read Jesus' petition asking You to "sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth" and to "protect them from the evil one," an abiding sense of security fills our hearts. Forgive us for trying to fight life's battles purely through our own human willpower. Thank You for not leaving us to struggle alone, but giving us Your word as an unshakable shield of truth. Guard our thoughts and emotions every day so that we remain grounded in Your promises rather than swayed by fear.

Lord, we also lift up our fellow believers, friends, and families seeking You today. Just as Jesus prayed, grant us hearts that walk in love and unity, reflecting Your true glory to the world. May every promise in John 17 become our daily courage and hope.
