Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to today's reading journey! Today, we are exploring Revelation Chapter 5 together.
When looking at the confusion, suffering, and helplessness in our world, we often ask: Who holds the ultimate destiny of human history? Who is worthy to open the scroll of God's redemption plan?
Let's pause and enter with reverence into the heavenly vision granted to John. There, every creature turns its gaze toward the One who conquered death and alone is worthy to take the scroll—our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb that was slain.
Where are we today?
Following the vision of heavenly worship in Chapter 4, Revelation 5 focuses on God's redemption and judgment plan for human history. Chapter 5 introduces three foundational themes:
The Sealed Scroll and John's Weeping (Revelation 5:1–4): John sees in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll sealed with seven seals. A strong angel proclaims, "Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?" When no one in heaven or earth is found worthy, John weeps deeply.
The Lion of Judah and the Slain Lamb (Revelation 5:5–7): One of the elders tells John not to weep, for "the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book." Looking closely, John sees a Lamb as it had been slain, stepping forward to take the scroll from the throne.
Universal Worship of the Lamb (Revelation 5:8–14): As the Lamb takes the scroll, the four living creatures, twenty-four elders, myriads of angels, and every creature in heaven and earth fall down to worship Him. They sing a new song praising Him for redeeming people to God by His blood out of every kindred, tongue, people, and nation.
5 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.
8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
“Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”
— Revelation 5:12 (KJV)
Victory Through Sacrifice: The world expects power in the form of brute strength (a Lion), but God's divine victory comes through sacrificial love (a Lamb slain). Jesus conquered death and earned all authority through His cross and resurrection.
The Master of History: No matter how chaotic our current circumstances appear, human destiny is not left to chance; it rests securely in the hands of the Lamb who loves us and gave Himself for us.
A Question to Ponder:
When facing uncertainties or uncontrollable struggles in life, do you trust that the Lamb slain on the cross still holds your life and history in His hands?
A Micro-Step Today:
Offer a prayer focused purely on praise today. Before listing your daily needs, echo the worship of heaven by declaring: "Lord Jesus, You alone are worthy of all honor, power, and glory!"
Loving Heavenly Father,
Thank You for speaking to us today through Revelation Chapter 5.
Lord Jesus, You are the Lion of Judah and the Lamb that was slain. Thank You for redeeming us with Your precious blood from every nation and language, making us children of God.
Grant us unwavering faith. When we look at the troubles of this world, help us not to despair, knowing that history and our lives are safe in Your nail-scarred hands. May our hearts continually praise You, giving You all power, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen!
