Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to today's reading journey! Today, we are exploring 1 Timothy Chapter 4 together.
In everyday life, we place high value on physical exercise, career skills, or personal growth. But do we give the same attention to spiritual growth and exercising ourselves unto godliness? How can we live out an impactful and authentic life when surrounded by confusing worldly chatter or feeling inexperienced?
Let's pause and take a quiet moment. Bringing a teachable heart, let's step into today's scripture to see how Paul exhorts young Timothy not to let anyone despise his youth, but to be an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
Where are we today?
1 Timothy Chapter 4 features Paul's urgent counsel to young Timothy concerning false doctrines and personal spiritual discipline:
Warning Against Apostasy and False Asceticism (1 Timothy 4:1–5): The Spirit expressly speaks that in latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits. Paul addresses false teachings that forbid marriage or demand abstinence from foods created by God to be received with thanksgiving and sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
A Good Minister of Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 4:6–10): Paul urges Timothy to be nourished up in the words of faith and good doctrine, refusing profane and old wives' fables. He highlights: "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."
Be an Example to Believers (1 Timothy 4:11–16): Paul charges Timothy: "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." He instructs him to give attendance to reading, exhortation, and doctrine, meditating on these things so his profiting may appear to all.
4 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
11 These things command and teach.
12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
— 1 Timothy 4:12 (KJV)
Godliness Holds Promise for Time and Eternity: While physical exercise has value, cultivating godliness transforms our inner character and spirit, carrying promises for both our current earthly journey and eternal life with God.
Impact Lies in Character, Not Age: Godliness is not reserved for the seasoned or elderly. Regardless of how long we have walked in faith, God looks at our genuine commitment to be an example in words, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
A Question to Ponder:
Among the areas of "word, conduct, love, faith, and purity," which one is God asking you to focus on and grow in today?
A Micro-Step Today:
Guard your speech today. Choose to speak words that encourage, build up, and give thanks, abstaining from gossip or critical remarks as an exercise in godliness.
