Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 33 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we enter one of the most solemn, majestic, and glorious passages in all of the Old Testament—Exodus Chapter 24.
If Chapters 20 through 23 presented the Ten Commandments and the holy ordinances decreed by God atop Mount Sinai, Chapter 24 serves as the sacred climax and ultimate ratification of the Sinai Covenant.
In this passage, we witness a defining moment in redemptive history: God and the people of Israel establish a covenant in blood at the foot of Mount Sinai. An altar is erected, sacrifice blood is sprinkled upon both the altar and the people, and a binding relationship between the Creator and His redeemed nation is formally sealed. Even more breathtaking, Israel's leaders ascend the mountain to behold the glory of God, while Moses steps alone into the consuming fire of the divine cloud, abiding in God's presence for forty days and forty nights.
This is a sacred invitation bridging heaven and earth, illustrating God’s heart to dwell in intimate fellowship with His people.
Let us enter Exodus Chapter 24 with hearts full of reverence, awe, and holy expectation.
1. What Happened Before: The Ordinances and the Prelude to the Covenant
Before reading Chapter 24, let us recall the grand narrative of Chapters 20 through 23. God audibly spoke the Ten Commandments to the entire assembly, followed by the "Book of the Covenant"—civil laws, protections for the vulnerable, holy feasts, and guidelines for worship communicated through Moses. Hearing these holy commands, the people responded in unison: "All the words which the Lord hath said will we do." Divine redemption had been accomplished, the Law had been delivered, and now, the formal covenant ceremony was about to take place.
2. Today's Thread: The Blood of the Covenant, The Holy Feast, and Forty Days in the Cloud
As dawn broke over Mount Sinai, a solemn atmosphere settled upon the camp. Moses rose early in the morning and built an altar at the base of the mountain, accompanied by twelve pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel gathered before God. Young Israelite men offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the Lord. Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, sprinkling it on the altar, and then read the Book of the Covenant in the audience of the people. Once more, the people affirmed their sacred commitment: "All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient." Moses then took the remaining blood and sprinkled it on the people, declaring solemnly: "Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words." The sprinkling of blood signified the ratification of the covenant, binding the lives of the people to the holiness of God.
Following this sacred ceremony, a divine invitation was extended. Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel ascended the mountain. There, a heavenly mystery unfolded before them: "They saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness." It was a vision of absolute holiness, serene glory, and transcendent majesty. Amazingly, God did not strike them down; covered by the blood of the covenant, these chosen leaders "saw God, and did eat and drink" in holy peace and fellowship.
Yet the spiritual ascent was not complete. The Lord called Moses to ascend further up into the mount to receive the tables of stone written by God's own hand. Leaving Aaron and Hur to govern the people below, Moses took his minister Joshua and climbed higher into the holy mountain.
As Moses ascended, the glory of the Lord rested upon Mount Sinai, shrouded in a thick cloud for six full days. On the seventh day, God called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. To the eyes of the Israelites below, the glory of the Lord appeared like a devouring fire on the mountaintop. Yet Moses boldly crossed into the divine darkness, entering into the midst of the cloud to abide with God for forty days and forty nights. There, in unhindered fellowship, God was about to reveal to him the divine pattern for the Tabernacle—His plan to dwell among His redeemed people.
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On "The Blood of the Covenant": Why was blood required to ratify the covenant? How does this foreshadow Christ's declaration at the Last Supper: "This is my blood of the new testament"?
On "Sapphire Clearness and Eating Before God": How were sinful men enabled to eat and drink in the presence of a holy God without being destroyed? What peace does blood atonement bring?
On "Entering the Cloud": While the people saw "devouring fire," Moses entered the "cloud." Are you seeking to move beyond superficial reverence into deep, personal intimacy with God?
24 And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the Lord, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off.
2 And Moses alone shall come near the Lord: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.
3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath said will we do.
4 And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.
5 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the Lord.
6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.
7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient.
8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.
9 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:
10 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.
11 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.
12 And the Lord said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.
13 And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God.
14 And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.
15 And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount.
16 And the glory of the Lord abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.
17 And the sight of the glory of the Lord was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.
18 And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
A Holy Covenant Requires Atoning Blood:
At Sinai, blood was applied both to the altar (representing God) and to the people. This demonstrates that fellowship between a holy God and sinful humanity rests entirely on atonement and cleansing. This points directly to Jesus Christ, who poured out His own blood to establish the New Covenant, cleansing us from sin and granting us eternal access to God.
Atonement Produces Peaceful Fellowship in God's Presence:
The seventy elders beholding God upon a pavement of sapphire while eating and drinking presents a picture of divine grace. Covered by the blood, holy terror gave way to sacred peace. True faith is not merely adherence to moral rules, but a living feast of communion with our Creator.
Moving from Distant Awe to Intimate Abiding:
While the congregation observed the devouring fire from afar, Moses responded to God's voice and entered the cloud for forty days. We are often tempted to remain distant observers of God's power, yet God invites us to step past worldly distractions into the quiet "cloud" of prayer and His Word, where true spiritual transformation occurs.
Connecting with Today's Questions:
When you reflect on the New Covenant sealed by Christ’s blood, do you experience genuine peace in His presence? Are you enjoying fellowship with Him, or are you still held back by fear and distance?
A Micro-Step Today:
Take an "Entering the Cloud" micro-step today:
Set aside 10 to 15 minutes of uninterrupted quiet today (creating your personal "cloud space") by stepping away from screens and noise.
Reflect on God's redemption in your life, offering a prayer of quiet surrender: "Lord, thank You for purchasing me through the precious blood of Jesus. I step away from daily distractions to abide in Your presence. Speak to my heart, and draw me deeper into fellowship with You."
Sovereign Heavenly Father, Holy and Eternal God of the Covenant,

We thank You for the precious blood of the New Covenant shed by our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. Through His sacrifice, our sins are washed away, enabling us to approach Your throne of grace with confidence and partake in the feast of eternal fellowship with You.
Draw our hearts closer to You, Lord. Do not let us remain distant spectators of Your power. Grant us holy courage and desire, like Moses, to step into the quiet cloud of prayer and Your Word. In those sacred moments of abiding, let Your glory shape our lives and reveal Your holy heart to us.
In the mighty and exalted name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen!
