Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 66 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we leave behind the fire and rain of Mount Carmel in 1 Kings to step into the poetic, worshipful wisdom of the Psalter—Psalm 1.
If historical books recorded national rises and falls, the Book of Psalms opens an intimate, soul-stirring dialogue between divine revelation and the human heart.
Serving as the threshold and gateway to all 150 psalms, Psalm 1 opens with a resounding declaration of divine favor: "Blessed."
Moved by the Holy Spirit, the psalmist distills all human life into two contrasting paths: the way of the righteous—who refuse the counsel of the ungodly, delight in the law of the Lord, and flourish like a tree planted by rivers of water; and the way of the ungodly—who are like chaff blown away by the wind, unable to stand in judgment.
Let us enter Psalm 1 with quiet, reflective, and longing hearts!
1. What Happened Before: Carmel's Fire and Entering Poetic Wisdom
Do you remember when we read about Elijah on Mount Carmel calling down fire from heaven? Throughout Israel's history, a consistent truth emerged: obedience brings blessing, while abandoning God brings ruin. Today, Scripture transitions us from historical battlefields into the sanctuary of wisdom, showing what a truly blessed life looks like.
2. Today's Thread: The Choice Between Two Paths—Who is Truly Blessed?
In a world filled with competing values, who is genuinely blessed?
The psalmist begins by drawing a clear boundary. True blessedness starts with a stance of separation: not walking in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standing in the way of sinners, nor sitting in the seat of the scornful. The progression—"walk, stand, sit"—warns how subtle compromise with sin leads to complete numbness.
Yet a blessed life is not merely about avoiding evil; it is defined by what the soul delights in: "His delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night."
The psalmist offers a striking metaphor: he is like a tree planted by rivers of water. This is not a wild tree struggling in a desert, but a cultivated tree nourished by an unfailing stream. It sinks deep roots, brings forth fruit in its season, keeps its leaf green during drought, and prospers in all it produces!
In sharp contrast stands the ungodly. The psalmist compares them to chaff which the wind driveth away—rootless, weightless, and lifeless. Therefore, the ungodly shall not stand in judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
The psalm closes with an eternal divine decree: "For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish."
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On "Walk, Stand, Sit": Sin's influence moves in subtle stages. Are there small areas where you have compromised with worldly "counsel"?
On "Planted by Rivers of Water": A tree thrives when its roots reach water. Are your soul's roots sinking into God's Word or worldly anxieties?
On "The Lord Knoweth": What comfort does it bring to know that the Lord intimately "knows" and watches over your path?
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
— Psalm 1:1-2 (KJV)
“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
— Psalm 1:3 (KJV)
“For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
— Psalm 1:6 (KJV)
Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
Guard Against Sin's Subtle Progression:
Psalm 1:1 outlines the three-stage slide of temptation: walking (considering ungodly counsel) $\rightarrow$ standing (participating in sinful ways) $\rightarrow$ sitting (settling into cynical scorn). Spiritual decline begins with small compromises. Blessedness starts with a decisive "no" to evil.
Sink Your Soul's Roots into the Stream of His Word:
Life brings heatwaves of trials and droughts of crisis; yet those rooted in God's Word remain green and fruitful. God's truth is the unfailing river for the human spirit. Daily delighting and meditating on His Word yields deep resilience and fruitfulness in every season.
Rest in the Assurance That "The Lord Knoweth Your Way":
Walking uprightly can feel lonely in a worldly culture. Yet Scripture promises: "The Lord knoweth the way of the righteous." God sees your faithful steps. While worldly success vanishes like windblown chaff, those who walk with God stand secure forever.

Is your soul like a deeply rooted, fruitful tree or windblown chaff scattered by worldly distractions? How much time do you spend delighting in God's Word?
