[Seeker & New Believer Reading Plan December 16] Today’s reading covers Isaiah Chapter 11. This daily guide includes an opening greeting, a narrative-driven context snapshot (featuring "What Happened Before" and "Today's Thread"), key verse (KJV), synchronized devotional thoughts, reflection questions, space for a worship song, and a scripture-grounded closing prayer.
Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 90 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we step into Isaiah Chapter 11—one of the most breathtaking, hope-filled, and comprehensive visions of the Messianic kingdom in all of Holy Scripture.
If Isaiah Chapter 9 presented the great Light breaking into darkness through the birth of the Prince of Peace, Chapter 11 unveils the full manifestation of His righteous rule, His Spirit-empowered character, and the cosmic harmony of His ultimate Kingdom!
Opening with a famous image of miraculous vitality out of apparent destruction, this chapter proclaims: "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots."
Throughout this passage, Isaiah delineates the character of the Messiah: the resting of the sevenfold Spirit of the Lord upon Him (wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord). He judges not after the sight of His eyes nor reproves after the hearing of His ears, but with righteousness pleads for the poor and meek.
Furthermore, Isaiah depicts the breathtaking restoration of creation's harmony: the wolf dwelling with the lamb, the leopard lying down with the kid, the calf, young lion, and fatling together, led by a little child. "They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."
Let us enter Isaiah Chapter 11 with joyful, expectant, and worshipful hearts!
1. What Happened Before: Light in Darkness to The Branch of Jesse
Do you remember our reading of Isaiah Chapter 9, where the prophet foretold the great Light shining in darkness and the child named Wonderful Counsellor? In Chapter 10, Isaiah portrayed the proud Assyrian empire felled like a dense forest. Today, Scripture shifts our eyes from the collapse of worldly empires to a tender Branch emerging from a seemingly dead stump.
2. Today's Thread: Life From the Cut-Down Tree and The Harmony of the Holy Mountain
Under the devastating invasions of Assyria, the nation of Judah resembled a forest cut down to the ground. Humanly speaking, the Davidic dynasty looked destroyed—reduced to an old, lifeless stump, "the stem of Jesse."
Yet out of this dry stump, Isaiah envisioned heaven's miraculous renewal. A tender shoot, green with divine life, emerged from the subterranean roots. Empowered not by human ambition but by the Spirit of the Lord—the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and reverent fear—this King governs without superficial prejudice. Girded with righteousness and faithfulness, He defends the poor and executes divine justice.
Following His reign comes a vision of cosmic peace. Ancient enmities in nature vanish: the predatory wolf dwells peacefully with the helpless lamb, the leopard lies beside the kid, lions eat straw like oxen, and a little child leads them safely. Nursing infants play safely near the cobra's den. Upon God's holy mountain, destruction ceases, for the knowledge of the Lord fills the earth as waters cover the sea, and the root of Jesse stands as an ensign for all nations.
Let us open Holy Scripture to read the prophecy of Isaiah Chapter 11!
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On the Stem of Jesse: Why does the prophecy reference Jesse (David's father) rather than King David himself? How does this highlight God's power to bring glorious renewal out of humble, barren origins?
On the Sevenfold Spirit: How were the gifts of the Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord) perfectly manifested in Jesus Christ? How can we seek this spiritual empowerment today?
On Creation's Harmony: Why is "the knowledge of the Lord filling the earth" the essential foundation for true, lasting peace and non-violence?
11 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
13 The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.
14 But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.
15 And the Lord shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
16 And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”

“And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”
— Isaiah 11:2 (KJV)
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid... They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”
— Isaiah 11:6, 9 (KJV)
