Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 60 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we step into 1 Samuel Chapter 16—a pivotal, masterfully woven narrative marking a divine turning point in redemptive history.
If previous chapters recorded Samuel's boyhood calling, Israel's demand for a king, and King Saul's tragic rejection due to pride and disobedience, Chapter 16 reveals how God quietly initiates a brand-new era for His people, preparing young David for the throne!
Grieving over Saul's spiritual downfall, the prophet Samuel is commanded by God to dry his tears and fill his horn with oil for a divine mission to Bethlehem. Inside the home of Jesse, as Samuel beholds tall, handsome Eliab, he assumes he is looking upon God's anointed. Yet God speaks a timeless, soul-searching principle: "The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."
After seven brothers pass by, young David—the youngest, forgotten in the wilderness tending sheep—is brought in. The moment the holy oil pours over his head, the Spirit of the Lord comes mightily upon him. Through Saul's torment by an evil spirit, God sovereignly orchestrates David's introduction into the royal court as a harpist, quietly shaping the future shepherd-king.
Let us enter 1 Samuel Chapter 16 with reverent, reflective, and renewed hearts!
1. What Happened Before: Saul's Rejection and Samuel's Grief
Do you remember when we read about King Saul's spiritual compromise? Trembling before the people and despising the Lord's command, Saul spared Amalek's cattle rather than completely obeying God's judgment. Heartbroken Samuel declared to Saul: "To obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams... because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king." Samuel mourned for Saul, yet God's sovereign purpose moved forward to raise a leader after His own heart.
2. Today's Thread: From Bethlehem's Anointing to Service in the Palace
The story opens with Samuel mourning for Saul. The Lord spoke to him: "How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons."
Samuel journeyed cautiously to Bethlehem, sanctifying Jesse and his sons for the sacrifice. When Jesse's eldest son Eliab walked in, tall and impressive, Samuel thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before him." But the Lord said unto Samuel: "Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."
Jesse then presented Abinadab, Shammah, and seven sons in total, but the Lord chose none of them. Samuel asked Jesse: "Are here all thy children?" Jesse replied: "There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep."
Samuel instructed Jesse to send for him. Young David was brought in—ruddy, with bright eyes and a handsome appearance. The Lord said: "Arise, anoint him: for this is he." Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.
In stark contrast, the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. Saul's servants suggested finding a skillful harpist whose music would soothe his troubled spirit. A young servant recommended David, describing him as a skillful musician, a valiant warrior, prudent in speech, comely in person, and "the Lord is with him."
Saul sent messengers to fetch David from the sheepfold. When David entered his service, Saul loved him greatly and made him his armourbearer. Whenever the distressing spirit came upon Saul, David played the harp, refreshing Saul's soul so that the evil spirit departed. Thus, in quiet providence, David took his first step into the royal palace!

15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
