Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 88 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we leave behind the wisdom literature to step into the grand, redemptive prophetic vision of Isaiah Chapter 6.
If Ecclesiastes concluded with "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man," the Book of Isaiah lifts our eyes above earthly thrones to behold the Thrice-Holy Lord of Hosts seated in transcendent glory!
Serving as one of the most famous call stories in sacred history, Isaiah 6 opens with solemn majesty: "In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple."
Throughout this awe-inspiring passage, Isaiah depicts seraphim crying one to another, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory!" Overwhelmed by absolute holiness, Isaiah cries out in self-despair over his unclean lips, only to be purged by a live coal from the altar.
When the Lord asks, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?", the cleansed prophet instantly responds: "Here am I; send me."
Let us enter Isaiah Chapter 6 with reverent, humbled, and surrendered hearts!
1. What Happened Before: Life Duty to Prophetic Calling
Do you remember our reading of Ecclesiastes Chapter 12, where the Preacher summoned us to fear God and keep His commandments before life ends? Today, Scripture moves us into divine revelation. In a time of national crisis, young Isaiah beholds the sovereign God upon His heavenly throne, receiving a life-transforming prophetic commission.
2. Today's Thread: Collapse of Earthly Security and The Heavenly Commission
In 740 B.C., the kingdom of Judah faced a grim crisis. King Uzziah, who had brought fifty years of military strength and economic prosperity, was dead. National security crumbled, the Assyrian threat loomed, and moral decay spread.
Amidst national despair, young Isaiah entered the temple. Suddenly, heavenly glory burst through the sanctuary. He saw the Lord seated upon a throne, high and lifted up, His royal train filling the temple. Seraphim hovered above, covering faces and feet in holy reverence, calling out continuously: "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory!" The doorposts shook at the sound, and the house filled with smoke.
Exposed to absolute divine holiness, Isaiah fell into profound conviction: "Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts." Yet divine grace acted swiftly—a seraph flew with a live coal taken with tongs from the altar, touched Isaiah's lips, and declared his iniquity removed and his sin purged.
With guilt wiped away, the voice of the Lord echoed from the throne: "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Cleansed and filled with gratitude, Isaiah stepped forward, declaring: "Here am I; send me!" Though warned that the people would be dull of hearing and hard of heart, Isaiah embraced his calling faithfully.
Let us open Holy Scripture to read the calling of Isaiah Chapter 6!
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On King Uzziah's Death: Why does the collapse of earthly security ("King Uzziah died") often become the precise moment our spiritual eyes open to see the Lord upon His throne?
On "Holy, Holy, Holy": What does this threefold declaration reveal about God's absolute holiness? Why is human conviction ("Woe is me!") the natural response to seeing God's glory?
On "Here Am I; Send Me": When did Isaiah offer his willingness? How does experiencing divine cleansing empower our response to God's call today?
6 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
12 And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
Look Past Crumbling Earthly Idols to the Eternal Throne:
We often anchor security in human alliances, career status, or wealth (our personal "King Uzziah"). When these crumble, we panic. Yet Isaiah reminds us: earthly powers pass away, but God's throne remains unshakeable. Trial is often the backdrop against which God reveals His sovereign reign.
True Spiritual Awakening Begins with Conviction Before His Holiness:
Self-righteousness vanishes when confronted by God's holiness. Real spiritual life begins when we confess: "I am a person of unclean lips." At the place of brokenness, Christ's altar cleanses us completely by His blood.
Cleansing Precedes Calling: "Here Am I; Send Me!":
God cleanses those He commissions. Isaiah responded not out of self-confident ambition, but from a heart filled with redeeming grace. Experiencing Christ's cleansing turns obedience from a heavy burden into a glorious privilege.
