Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to today's reading journey! Today, we are exploring 1 Thessalonians Chapter 3 together.
In times when those you love are going through trials or difficult seasons, do you ever feel a deep sense of concern and longing for their well-being? And when you hear that they are holding fast and standing strong, how refreshing is that peace to your heart?
Let's pause and take a quiet moment. Bringing a caring and attentive heart, let's step into today's scripture to see Paul's heart for the young church, his joy in their perseverance, and his earnest prayer for their spiritual growth.
Where are we today?
1 Thessalonians Chapter 3 reveals Paul's deep pastoral affection and desire for the believers' steadfastness:
Sending Timothy to Establish the Church (1 Thessalonians 3:1–5): Unable to wait any longer out of intense concern, Paul chooses to remain in Athens alone and sends Timothy to establish and comfort the Thessalonian believers, so that no one would be shaken by afflictions or tempted away from their faith.
Timothy's Good News and Paul's Comfort (1 Thessalonians 3:6–10): Timothy returns with good tidings of their faith and charity. Paul is deeply comforted in all his distress and affliction, exclaiming that he truly "lives" now that he knows they stand fast in the Lord, while continuing to pray night and day to see them again.
Prayer for Love and Holiness (1 Thessalonians 3:11–13): Paul prays that God direct his way to them, and that the Lord make the believers increase and abound in love toward one another, establishing their hearts unblameable in holiness at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;
2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:
8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.
9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.
12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
“For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.”
— 1 Thessalonians 3:8 (KJV)
Faith is Tested and Strengthened in Affliction: Paul reminds believers that trials are part of the Christian walk. Real spiritual strength comes from rooting our hearts firmly in the Lord rather than expecting a life free of obstacles.
Mutual Love Builds Unshakable Hearts: Paul prays not only for their survival through hardship, but that their love for one another would abound. A thriving spiritual life is rooted in genuine community, mutual encouragement, and hope in Christ's return.
A Question to Ponder:
Is there someone in your life currently facing pressure or a trial? How can you extend encouragement to help them stand firm in faith today?
A Micro-Step Today:
Reach out to a friend or brother/sister in Christ who may be struggling. Send them a thoughtful message of support and let them know you are praying for them.
