Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 51 of our Old Testament journey! Today, we step into Judges Chapter 7—one of the most legendary, dramatic, and faith-inspiring passages in the Old Testament.
If Chapter 6 recorded God's call to insecure Gideon at the winepress and the altar of Jehovah-Shalom, Chapter 7 reveals how that divine peace turns into a jaw-dropping military miracle!
Confronted by a massive Midianite coalition numbering 135,000 men that carpeted the valley like locusts, Gideon rallied 32,000 Israeli warriors. Yet God's strategic directive to Gideon was completely counterintuitive: He systematically reduced the army from 32,000 down to a mere three hundred men!
God purposed to teach Israel and all generations that victory belongs not to human numbers or physical strength, but to the Lord alone. In the dead of night, equipped only with trumpets, empty pitchers, and hidden torches, this band of three hundred broke their pitchers, held up their lights, and blew their trumpets with the cry: "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon!" Without drawing a single sword, they watched God throw the entire enemy camp into fatal panic and self-destruction!
Let us enter Judges Chapter 7 with awe-filled, expectant, and trusting hearts!
1. What Happened Before: Calling at the Winepress and Signs of the Fleece
Do you remember when we read about Gideon threshing wheat inside a hidden winepress? God called him a "mighty man of valour" and gave him the peace of Jehovah-Shalom. After tearing down his father's altar of Baal and receiving double confirmation through the fleece of wool, Gideon—clothed with the Spirit of the Lord—blew a trumpet and gathered 32,000 men to face the Midianite oppressors.
2. Today's Thread: From Thirty-Two Thousand to Three Hundred
At daybreak, Gideon camped by the well of Harod, overlooking the Midianite army of 135,000 camped in the valley below. On the eve of battle, the Lord said to Gideon: "The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me."
God then instituted two rigorous screenings:
The First Screening (Sifting the Fearful): Anyone trembling with fear was permitted to leave. Immediately, 22,000 men departed, leaving 10,000;
The Second Screening (The Water Test): God brought the 10,000 down to the water to observe how they drank. Most bowed down on their knees to lap directly with their mouths, but three hundred men scooped water with their hands, lapping it while keeping their eyes up and alert. God selected these vigilant three hundred men, sending the rest home.
Facing 135,000 enemies with three hundred men appeared suicidal by human logic. Gracing Gideon's lingering fear, God told him to sneak down to the Midianite camp at night with his servant. Overshearing two enemy soldiers talking, Gideon heard one describe a dream: a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian and struck a tent so that it fell flat. His companion gasped in terror: "This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon... for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host!"
Hearing this divine dream completely ignited Gideon's faith! He worshipped God on the spot, rushed back to camp, and shouted: "Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian!"
Gideon divided the three hundred into three companies, giving every man a trumpet and an empty pitcher with a torch hidden inside. At the beginning of the middle watch, they surrounded the Midianite camp. At Gideon's signal, all three companies blew their trumpets, brake the pitchers in their hands, held the lamps in their left hands and trumpets in their right, and cried out: "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon!"
Total panic engulfed the enemy camp! The Lord set every man's sword against his fellow throughout the entire host, and the massive army fled in chaos as Israel pursued them in a sweeping victory.
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On "The People Are Too Many": Why did God reduce the army from 32,000 to 300? Why is self-reliance often the greatest obstacle to experiencing God's power?
On "Lapping Water Alertly": Why did God select the three hundred who drank alertly? What does spiritual alertness mean in our daily lives?
On "Broken Pitchers Revealing Light": The hidden torches shone only when the clay pitchers were smashed. How does this connect with Paul's teaching in 2 Corinthians 4:7 ("We have this treasure in earthen vessels")?
7 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
2 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
4 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
7 And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.
22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.
25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.
“And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.”
— Judges 7:2 (KJV)
“And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.”
— Judges 7:7 (KJV)
“And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.”
— Judges 7:20 (KJV)
Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
Victory Belongs to the Lord, Not Human Strength:
Humans naturally lean on earthly security—numbers, wealth, strategic connections, or talents. Yet God often strips away human buffers, reducing our options to a helpless "three hundred," so that we learn to depend solely on Him. When we acknowledge our utter insufficiency, His divine power rests fully upon us!
Cultivating Spiritual Alertness in Times of Comfort:
Faced with testing, 22,000 fled in fear, and 9,700 lost awareness while indulging in immediate comfort (趴着喝水). Only three hundred remained alert while meeting their basic needs. God delights in using believers who stay watchful, vigilant, and ready for His command amid daily routines.
Breaking the "Earthen Vessel" to Release Christ's Light:
The hidden torch blazed brightly only when the fragile pitcher was shattered. Paul echoes this truth: "We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." When we allow God to break our pride, self-will, and stubborn independence (our fragile clay pitcher), the radiant light of Christ within us shines brightly into a dark world.
Connecting with Today's Questions:
Is there a personal strength, resource, or human fallback you rely on more than God? Are you willing to let God break your self-reliance so His power can shine through you?
A Micro-Step Today:
Take a "Laying Down Self-Reliance & Shining His Light" micro-step today:
Surrender Control: Bring one situation you are anxiously trying to manipulate into God's presence. Pray: "Lord, I acknowledge my limits. I lay down self-reliance and place this situation entirely into Your mighty hands!"
Be an Alert Light-Bearer: Stay spiritually watchful today. Instead of joining in workplace or family complaints, break your self-centeredness and serve someone with patience and joy, letting Christ's light shine through you.
O Sovereign, Holy, Almighty, and Wonder-Working Heavenly Father,
As we read Judges Chapter 7 today, we stand by the well of Harod, beholding the three hundred chosen warriors, witnessing the shattered pitchers and blazing torches in the dark, and hearing the triumphant cry: "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon!" We exalt You, Lord! Victory depends not on human armies or physical power, but on Your sovereign presence. You dismantle our proud self-reliance so that in our weakness, Your salvation shines alone.
Forgive us, Lord, for boasting in our own resources and strength. Grant us spiritual alertness like the three hundred, keeping us awake, vigilant, and responsive to Your voice in a world filled with distraction and compromise.
Break our fragile earthen vessels, Lord! Shatter our pride, self-centeredness, and stubbornness, that the glorious light of Jesus Christ living within us may shine brightly, dispelling darkness and bringing glory to Your holy name!
In the exalted and matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen!
