Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, peace be with you in the Lord!
Welcome to today's reading journey! Today, we begin a warm and hope-filled epistle—1 Thessalonians Chapter 1.
In everyday life, when faced with pressures, uncertainties, or changing environments, how can we remain steadfast and even become a source of positive encouragement to those around us?
Let's pause and take a quiet moment. Bringing a receptive and eager heart, let's step into today's scripture to discover how the Thessalonian believers embraced the gospel with faith, love, and hope despite affliction.
Where are we today?
1 Thessalonians Chapter 1 serves as Paul's grateful and affirming opening to the church in Thessalonica:
Grateful Thanksgiving and Prayer (1 Thessalonians 1:1–4): Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy greet the Thessalonian church. Paul constantly thanks God in prayer, remembering their "work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ," affirming their election by God.
Power of the Gospel and Exemplary Testimony (1 Thessalonians 1:5–10): Paul highlights that the gospel came to them not in word only, but in power, in the Holy Ghost, and with deep conviction. Receiving the word in much affliction with joy of the Holy Ghost, they became examples to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia, turning from idols to serve the living God and wait for His Son from heaven.
1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
“Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father.”
— 1 Thessalonians 1:3 (KJV)
The Triad of Living Faith: Faith, Love, and Hope: True faith is never mere intellectual assent; it produces tangible fruit. Faith leads to active work, love drives sacrificial labor, and hope sustains patient endurance through every trial.
Joy in the Midst of Affliction: The Thessalonians embraced the gospel not in ease, but during intense hardship, filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Real spiritual joy depends not on outer circumstances, but on an inner connection with God.
A Question to Ponder:
Reflecting on your current season, in which area—your "work of faith," "labour of love," or "patience of hope"—do you desire God's strengthening the most?
A Micro-Step Today:
Practice a small "labour of love" today by reaching out to a friend or colleague who is feeling stressed, offering practical help or a word of encouragement.
