[Seeker & New Believer Reading Plan January 21] Today's reading covers John Chapter 21. This daily guide includes an opening greeting, a narrative context snapshot (featuring "What Happened Before" and "Today's Thread"), key verses, synchronized daily heart-checks, reflection questions, space for a worship song, and a simple closing prayer.
Dear Brothers, Sisters, and Friends, Peace in the Lord!
Welcome to Day 21 of our Bible reading journey! Today is January 21st, and we are so glad to continue walking together.
Yesterday in John Chapter 20, we witnessed the wonder of the empty tomb and received the peace brought by the risen Lord through locked doors. Today, we follow the disciples back to the Sea of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) for a remarkably warm and intimate breakfast on the mist-shrouded shore.
Here we find exhausting labor yielding empty nets, a miraculous catch of 153 large fish on the right side of the boat, a warm fire of coals waiting on the sand, and Jesus' soul-piercing question to Peter: "Lovest thou me more than these?"
Let us enter today's reading with expectant and reverent hearts!
1. What Happened Before: From Locked Rooms to the Familiar Sea
Yesterday in Chapter 20, the risen Lord appeared to His disciples, breathed the Holy Spirit upon them, and turned Thomas' doubts into awe-filled worship. In Chapter 21, following His instructions, the disciples return to Galilee. Yet on this familiar coast where they were first called, Peter and several others return to fishing, encountering a long, frustrating night.
2. Today's Thread: Empty Nets at Dawn, A Stranger on the Shore, and Fireside Restoration
Under the cover of night, waves slapped against the wooden boat. Peter and six other disciples labored all night, casting their heavy nets again and again—only to pull up empty nets every time. As dawn began to break over the water, weariness and frustration hung over the crew.
Through the morning mist, a solitary figure stood on the shore, calling out to them: "Children, have ye any meat?" From the boat came a weary reply: "No."
The stranger smiled and offered a peculiar instruction: "Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find."
Doubtfully, they hauled the net over to the right side and let it down—suddenly, the net strained under an incredible weight! They were barely able to haul it in, teeming with 153 large fish, yet the net remained unbroken!
John gasped as revelation struck: "It is the Lord!" Hearing this, Peter threw on his outer coat and plunged headlong into the sea, swimming eagerly toward the shore!
When the disciples reached the land, a touching sight met their eyes: a charcoal fire was already burning, with fish laying on it and warm bread ready. Jesus welcomed them softly: "Come and dine."
After breakfast, looking across the glowing embers at Peter—who had denied Him three times beside another charcoal fire—Jesus asked three identical, searching questions that penetrated to the very depths of Peter's soul...
What miracle unfolded on that misty shoreline? What did Jesus ask Peter three times? And what sacred restoration did He entrust to his hands?
The answers await you in today's chapter. We invite you to open your Bible and discover the truth!
💡 Questions to keep in mind while reading today:
On "Cast the Net on the Right Side": Why did human skill fail all night while obedience to Jesus yielded abundance immediately? How does this speak to our self-effort versus His guidance?
On "Lovest Thou Me?": Why did Jesus ask Peter "Lovest thou me?" three times? How does this mirror and heal Peter's previous three denials by the fire?
On "Follow Thou Me": When Peter grew curious about another disciple's future, Jesus replied, "What is that to thee? follow thou me." How does this free us from comparison?
21 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.
12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.
14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Synchronized with the core questions from our reading guide:
Trade Exhausting Self-Effort for His Wise Direction:
The disciples were veteran fishermen, yet a whole night of skill brought empty nets until they obeyed Jesus' voice. When feeling drained or unproductive in life, pause and listen for the Shepherd's gentle direction.
Receive Forgiveness and Restoration in His Love:
Peter was burdened by guilt over his threefold denial, yet Jesus met him with grace, asking "Lovest thou me?" to heal his heart and re-commission him: "Feed my sheep." No past failure excludes you from His restoration and love.
Fix Your Eyes on Jesus and Leave Comparison Behind:
When Peter became distracted by another's path, Jesus reminded him: "What is that to thee? follow thou me." Your calling is unique; do not measure your journey against others, but follow Him faithfully.
